1 pt of rubbing alcohol (70% alcohol)
4 Tablespoons of Boric Acid Powder (this will not dissolve Must SHAKE every time it is used)
16 Drops( same as 1cc) of Gentian Violet 1% (you can get your pharmacist to get these)

Put in ear and massage below the ear, step back and let them shake.
This will stain the white coats, but it will eventually disappear.

Recommendations/Comments :Shake well before each use. FILL the ear canal twice daily for a week, then once daily for a week, then weekly thereafter. If the ears are super nasty, you may want to treat with Panalog for a week to start the healing process, as the alcohol may burn. Some dogs react, some don't. No need to clean the ears out at this point, or to pull hair. Remember, these ears are RAW, that stuff that looks like mud coming out of the ears is dried, or not so dried, BLOOD. Once the ears are well on their way to recovery, you can poof some boric acid powder (dry) into the ears, and it will help you get a grip on the hair to pull it out. Just let them start to heal so you don't cause more pain. The alcohol will saturate down to the bottom more and more each time. I use a detergent bottle pop top on the alcohol bottle to squirt it into the ears. THIS STUFF WILL STAIN. Use it outside, or somewhere where purple isn't an issue. Oddly, it will eventually wash out of white dog hair. It won't wash out of clothing, and it will permanently stain linoleum. Hey! What's perfect? It's cheap and it works. You may have to get your pharmacist to order the gentian violet, and sometimes I have to sign the poison book, and sometimes not!? SOMETIMES, on standards especially, when you think the ears are all cleared up, and you stop, the goo starts to come back. I'm told that's pseudomonas (sp?). Twice a week, after you have reinstituted your treatment, give the ears a good healthy squirt of vinegar & water (1:1) and that will clear up, too.
