Getting Started With Obedience

by Donna Kaplan

Any dog will learn to like toys, food, play, clicker if you teach them...

1. There are NO toys about for the dogs to play with alone, all playing must be done with YOU the handler. All games start and stop on your say so.

2. To get the dog started all meals are hand feed dog must earn his food.

3. Play time is at your suggestion otherwise the dog is just hanging out. If he doesn't care to play, you take yourself away and the fun and toys and food go also. Life is boring without you.

4. If this sounds mean, its not. You are trying to teach the dog that it is worth his while to interact with you... for all kinds of good things.

5. This can take a while so don't get frustrated or give up even a simple little sit for a bite of breakfast is something to make a big deal about.

6. Now that you are starting to get the dogs attentions don't think he is fixed because he isn't ...

7. Start working on basic commands for food a game, whatever you think the dog enjoys or mix it up.

8. The most difficult thing about these types of dogs is we the handlers get our feelings hurt, we take it personally that the dog doesn't want to work for us. Its not personal, it's who the dog is. If we want the dog to work we must be more interesting then the environment, his day dreams, we must be exciting and do strange and goofy things...

9. Humans are boring and predictable, so don't be.... hop, skip, and jump around, walking and heeling are boring make it fun and exciting. Hide food on your body, toys on your body and have it arrive after a few good heeling steps. Have treats grow out of the dogs ears or your hat. Whatever you can think of to keep the dog interacting with you.

10. Now the dog is seeing you and life in a different light. He will want to work more often. Hungry dogs will work for food, they will react to the clicker. Independent dogs will want to be with you and work for you when you are interesting and happy and up!!! Lazy dogs will get excited if you are doing something fun.

Training these types of dogs is hard work and not always the best fun for the handler, but we need to train the dog at the end of our leashes. If you have one of these dogs your choices are train it, rehome it, or let it be. Will they become the dog you always wanted. easy ,love to train working dog? PROBABLY NOT, it's not in their personality. Will they get better and more willing? YES! You have taught them to work for food, toy, a good game. These dogs require more pay than others. YES, you can pay then on a regular bases and still take them in for an obedience test. The more they do it the more they are conditioned to work, and the more they enjoy it (at their level). However, they will NOT be self starters, the dog will NOT say "train me". They will still be who they are. YOU are just creating an environment for them to step into, and for them to interact with you for a while. While they are there you must keep them with you. It's never going to be a 50 /50 partnership, but the more you do, the better it should get as long as you remember who the dog is.
