Handling Pups From Birth To Eight Weeks

by Jac Harbour

Week 1

Rub newborn pup dry with a towel until pup cries.

Check over each wet pup to make sure all is well/ok.

Once all are born do tails and dew claws.

Everyday handle pups by rubbing them all over, turn them over 360 degrees, one day sideways, the other day head over heels. Squeeze a foot or an ear, or pinch a piece of skin...not enough to make them cry, but so that they try to pull away. Give lots of kisses.

Put on different surfaces as whelping pen is cleaned out.

Weigh pups daily.

If puppies are stressed in any other way omit the daily stressing.

Week 2

Clip nails or grind.

Continue as above adding new stresses, like cold, rough, slippery, uneven surfaces leaving them fractionally longer each day.

Week 3

Alternate with dark and lighted room as their eyes open.

Flip lights on and off.

Have radio turned on. Classical station at first going to family station to rock then hard rock station. Turn volume up & down.

Slam doors and drawers, drop noisy pots and pans, burst balloons.

Put toys in the box - hard, soft, balls, tin cans with dog food inside so they rattle, squeaky toys, etc.

Introduce a wing.

Introduce food.

Take them, at least two at a time, away from the whelping room to explore and play.

Week 4

Put collars on them.

Clip their faces and butts.

Put them outside.

Give them bones to chew on.

Intro them to water.

Whistle them to come for their food.

Do table exercises - sit, down, stand, sit, down and stand, look in their mouth, feel them all over as a vet would.

Roll the more dominant ones onto their backs and stroke thier tummys.

Brush them daily.

Take them one at a time to play.

Week 5

Take for walks around your yard.

Expand their walks.

Take for car rides one at a time.

Lots of visitors.

Put a lead on them.

Week 6

Start separating them. Leave some in their whelping area, others go outside, and others are with you. Leave one by itself.

Start clicker work with sit and down, come, etc.

Have a crate open with food treats inside.

Feed them in a crate individually.

Week 7

Continue to feed them in crates.

Crate them 2 at a time them by themselves overnight.

Take them to different places, like empty parking lots, and let them explore on lead.

Week 8

Temperament test and go to homes - yeah !
